A statement by the Taliban* spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid refuted allegations that the movement received remuneration from the Russian military intelligence for the killing of US troops in Afghanistan, as previously reported by the New York Times, citing sources in the US intelligence agencies.

As the Russian Embassy in the United States reported on June 27, in connection with this publication containing false and unproven information, Russian diplomats received threats in Washington and London. The Russian embassy demanded that the US authorities respond adequately to the threats, and the Russian Foreign Ministry called the information in NYT "fake".

“Earlier, some Western media outlets reported that the Islamic Emirate’s fighters received payments from Russia for the killing of US troops and other rumors of this kind. We strongly reject this claim. The jihad lasting 19 years ... does not owe anything to any authorities intelligence or foreign countries, the Emirate does not need anyone to set goals", - RIA Novosti quoted the Taliban* official as saying.

"These rumors are circulating to create obstacles to the withdrawal of US troops, to weaken and mislead the peace supporters in America and to attribute the great heroism and achievements of Afghans to foreign circles. We assure our people and the whole world that the Islamic Emirate is not a tool, and is not used to promote foreign goals", - the Taliban stressed.

According to the representative of the radical movement, peace in Afghanistan will come only when the agreement reached earlier with the United States is implemented.

On February 29, a peace agreement was signed between the United States and the Taliban* in Qatar to phase out American troops from Afghanistan, suggesting that if the Taliban refrain from violence, the United States will completely withdraw its military contingent and NATO forces from the country within 14 months.

The war in Afghanistan has not stopped for more than 30 years. At first, Afghan mujahideen fought against government troops and the limited contingent of troops of the USSR, introduced into the country in 1979. After the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1989, a civil war broke out in numerous clans over zones of influence and between large military formations for power in the country. In 2001, the United States introduced its military contingent in Afghanistan, and the protracted war continued.
