During the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) it was stated that some measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus infection detrimentally influence on the environment. We are talking about plastic masks, gloves, sanitizer bottles.

- On our streets, beaches and ocean wave struck COVID-19 waste including plastic face masks, gloves, bottles of hand sanitizer and food packaging, - it was said in a statement.

At the same time, the UN stressed that measures against the coronavirus have led to a 5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The organization notes that 75% of all plastic left over from measures to combat covid is likely to become waste, increasing landfills and ending up in the sea.

A study by the Portuguese University of Aveiro in June stated that during the pandemic, 129 billion face masks and 65 billion gloves are used every month around the world.

Let us recall that in two months, American activists of the Ocean Voyages Institute have rid the ocean of 103 tons of plastic waste.
