“The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry strongly condemns the decision of the Syrian Arab Republic to recognize the so-called “independence” of the temporarily occupied territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In response to this unfriendly act, Ukraine announces the severance of diplomatic relations with Syria without severing consular relations”, - the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported (TASS quote).
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also announced the start of a trade embargo against Syria. In addition, the possibility of imposing other sanctions that will affect Syrian legal entities is being considered. The recognition of the DPR and LPR by the Syrian authorities was announced the day before, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic announced its intention to establish diplomatic relations with them.
“We consider this decision as an unfriendly act against Ukraine, an encroachment on its sovereignty and territorial integrity, a gross violation of Ukrainian legislation, the UN Charter and the fundamental norms and principles of international law”, - the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
At the same time, the Ukrainian embassy in Damascus has been closed since 2016, and in 2018 Ukraine demanded that the Syrian embassy in Kyiv be closed. The interests of Ukrainians in Syria are protected by the embassy in Lebanon.
