The overwhelming majority of Russian cities with a high or very high level of air pollution are located in the Siberian Federal District, said the participants in the meeting of the SB RAS Presidium on ecology, which took place in Novosibirsk.
These data (taken, by the way, from open sources) shocked the academicians themselves so much that they decided to classify their report. Thus, the founder of the Institute of Oil and Gas Geology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Alexey Kontorovich called the message "a bomb on the eve of the elections":
“Imagine that we publish these reports with concentrated information - like a bomb on the eve of the elections! What will happen? It is difficult to predict the results, - said the founder of the Institute of Oil and Gas Geology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Alexei Kontorovich. - We have no right to this. Therefore, proposals for publication must be weighed ten times. It is impossible to excite the population with unnecessary questions. We need to raise these questions before the companies (responsible for harmful emissions - ed.), address it to the state".
“We have to promote our activities carefully. Some data should not be published blindly. We must not create alarmist sentiments, ”said Valentin Parmon, head of the SB RAS. He also added that allegedly Roshydromet "does not have sufficiently accurate instruments" and "may have incorrect results".
Meanwhile, for example, in the capital of Tuva, Kyzyl, the amount of benzopyrene in the air regularly exceeds the norm by 116 times, and in Abakan - by 88 times. The maximum air pollution, expressed in exceeding the MPC norms by tens of times with nitrates and fluorides, was revealed in Novokuznetsk. In total, 78% of the list of the dirtiest Russian cities are located in Siberia.
Scientists analyzed the incidence rate of the region's inhabitants, naming the cities with the highest rates: Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Novokuznetsk and Irkutsk. For example, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, oncopathologies dominate, in the Kemerovo Region - congenital malformations, in the Altai Territory - diseases of children.
Journalist Boris Myshlyavtsev, who lives in Kyzyl, comments on this information:
“Thus, the dirtiest air in terms of benzopyrene (the strongest carcinogen) is in Kyzyl. Academician Parmon doesn't believe in accurate measurements? Let him come to the Tuvan capital in winter, when the neighboring house is often not visible due to smog. He breathes this air for a week - and spits out black clots from his lungs.
Wow, our Academy of Sciences began to think not about the establishment of scientific truth, but about the results of the elections. To me, too, political strategists. As a result, when it is decided to disperse the Academy of Sciences completely, no one will be indignant. "Let the elections be handled"...".
At the same time, Interfax reports that Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov doubts that the decision of academicians not to publish a report on the state of affairs with the environment in Siberian cities was dictated by political motives: “This decision of scientists should probably be asked from them. I do not know that this was done there under the influence of some directives or some instructions. If I understand correctly, it was the decision of the scientists themselves".
