Will Nursultan Nazarbayev see the debunking of his person during his lifetime?
Below we will allow ourselves to quote key, in our opinion, paragraphs from the first speech of Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev as president in March 2019.
“I consider it necessary to immortalize the name of our great contemporary, the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev, as follows.
Our capital should bear his name and be called Nursultan. Such a proposal has already been made by parliamentarians in the Declaration adopted on November 23, 2016 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Further. To erect a monument in honor of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the capital of our state. Name the central streets of all regional cities after Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev. I think everyone will agree that Elbasy is worthy of rewarding with the highest ranks of our state - Khalyk Khagarmany and Enbek Yeri.
Elbasy should also be granted the status of Honorary Senator.
All portraits and photographs depicting the First President, Elbasy will remain as an indispensable attribute of public premises, offices of civil servants, educational institutions. All vital activities of the Elbasy will be ensured in accordance with the law on the First President - Leader of the Nation and other legislative acts. The entire service infrastructure is preserved for Elbasy.
At the same time, it is necessary to proceed from the fact that, according to the laws adopted by the Parliament, Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev remains the only and lifelong Elbasy (Father of the people) in our country. He is also the President of the Security Council, the President of the Nur Otan Party, the President of the Assembly of the People, and a member of the Constitutional Council. The authoritative opinion of Elbasy will have a special, one might say, priority importance in the development and adoption of strategic decisions".
All points of this program were completed in the shortest possible time in full scope. However, popular protests and crowd demands "Old man, go away!" forced Tokayev to remove Nazarbayev from the post of Head of the Security Council. Yes, the First President is still the "father of the nation". Here are just millions of his "children" and "grandchildren" do not want to acknowledge kinship.
So Tokayev will most likely have to do exactly what happened to the memory of another "father of nations" after 1953.
A significant difference between the process: Nazarbayev, unlike Stalin, is still alive. And it will be painful to watch how monuments collapse and busts fly... But this, apparently, is the fate of all autocrats suffering from delusions of their own grandeur.
