The sincere hopes of the first President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev for peace with the countries of the West did not come true. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking at the opening of the Knowledge marathon.

According to REN TV, citing Peskov's statement, Mikhail Gorbachev sincerely wanted to believe that the cold war between Russia and the West would end.

“He sincerely wanted to believe that the Cold War would end and there would be an eternal romantic period between the new Soviet Union and the world, and the West, the collective West. This romanticism did not materialize, ”Peskov quotes the publication.

A Kremlin spokesman explained that, contrary to Gorbachev's hopes, there was no romantic period.

“The bloodthirstiness of our opponents has shown itself. It is good that we realized and understood this in time, ”said the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation.

The first and last President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev died on the evening of August 30 at the age of 92. For a long time, the politician struggled with a serious illness. He suffered from kidney failure and underwent hemodialysis. The day before, he independently arrived at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow, where he soon died.

The news of Gorbachev's death caused great regret among those who knew him. Condolences on the death of the politician were expressed by the head of the UN António Guterres, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the current head of the German government Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, US President Joe Biden and many others.

It is not yet known whether Gorbachev's funeral in Moscow will be of a state character and whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit them.

The Kremlin said that the decision on this has not yet been made: consultations with the Gorbachev family are needed. It is possible that the ex-president of the USSR will be buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow next to the grave of his wife Raisa, who died in 1999.
