The first president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, died after a serious illness. He was 91 years old. Gorbachev died at the Central Clinical Hospital on the evening of 30 August.

According to the telegram channel Mash, on the eve of his death, he arrived at the Central Clinical Hospital for hemodialysis - Gorbachev had kidney problems. The ex-general secretary died in the special department of the hospital.

Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1981 in the Stavropol Territory, in the village of Privolnoye. He graduated in 1955 from Moscow State University. Lomonosov, Faculty of Law, in 1967 - correspondence department of the Stavropol Agricultural Institute. Engaged in party work.

In 1985, during an extraordinary plenum of the Central Committee of the CPSU, he was elected General Secretary, from October 1, 1988, he also held the post of Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, combining the highest positions of the state and the party.

Gorbachev announced the reforms that later went down in history as "perestroika". In 1990, by his decree, state censorship was abolished. In addition, entrepreneurship was legalized under him, and "New Thinking" was proclaimed in foreign policy. One of the main achievements of Gorbachev is the beginning of nuclear disarmament. He played one of the key roles in the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In connection with the death of the politician, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that Gorbachev did the most for a peaceful end to the Cold War. In turn, the current President of the United States, Joe Biden, called the first president of the USSR a man of outstanding views, also recalling the meeting with him in 2009. Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted that he was proud to call Gorbachev a friend.
