The decision to organize a state funeral for former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in the Kremlin has not yet been made. The issue will be resolved during the day on August 31.

This was announced to journalists by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

As Peskov clarified, the organization of Gorbachev's funeral will be dealt with on Wednesday, a decision is expected before the end of the day.

“So far, no decisions have been made. The day has begun, so here you need to have a little patience, ”RIA Novosti quoted Peskov as saying.

The Kremlin speaker specified that the format of the procedure depends on the wishes of the relatives and former of the late politician.

Earlier sources said that Gorbachev's funeral would not be of a state nature, but then these reports were refuted.

Mikhail Gorbachev died on the evening of August 30 at the age of 92 in the special department of the Central Clinical Hospital after a long illness. According to media reports, the politician had kidney problems, he underwent hemodialysis.

Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 in the Stavropol Territory, in the village of Privolnoye. He graduated in 1955 from Moscow State University. Under Gorbachev, perestroika began in the country, “new thinking” was proclaimed, entrepreneurship was legalized, and in 1990, state censorship was abolished by his decree. One of the main achievements of Gorbachev was the beginning of nuclear disarmament, as well as the completion of the issue of German unification. In 1990, the former president of the USSR won the Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to the normalization of relations between the Soviet Union and Western countries.

In connection with the death of the politician, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that Gorbachev did the most for a peaceful end to the Cold War. French President Emmanuel Macron called Gorbachev a man of the world. And he stressed that "his choice opened the way for Russians to freedom ".

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described Grbachev as an authoritative and respected leader who played an important role in the fall of the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall, as well as in stopping the Cold War.

Incumbent US President Joe Biden called the first president of the USSR a man of outstanding views who risked his career for a peaceful future , and Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he was proud to call Gorbachev his friend.
