New Year's Eve spending of citizens turned out to be the minimum in five years

On December 30 - the day of peak pre-New year demand - spending by Russian buyers may fall by 24% year-on-year. Expenses on this day will be the minimum for the last five years.

This is the conclusion reached by analysts of the online payment service "Tinkoff Checkout", writes Kommersant. The last time the decrease was recorded in 2018 and amounted to 4%. The trend is observed throughout the year.

In 2019-2021, on December 30, buyers spent 68% more than on normal days. This year, New Year's Eve spending may be 44% higher than everyday spending. According to Infoline-Analytics, pre-holiday expenses will be reduced by no more than 15%.

VTB found out that about 40% of citizens will keep last year's spending level, 30% expect their growth or are going to reduce. The share of Russians who are ready to buy New Year's gifts at sales has fallen from 39% to 30% since last year, and new clothes or interior items — from 19% to 14%.This year, the New Year's Eve growth in the attendance of shopping centers in the country is less pronounced, Focus Technologies noted.

According to the Mall Index, in Moscow shopping malls on December 19-25, attendance increased by 9% compared to the previous seven days. In comparison with the same period in 2021, the indicator is 11% lower, and in comparison with the end of December 2019 — by 26%.
