Sakhalin officials complain on the icebreaker that "caught" the petrels

The Sakhalin region Ministry of Ecology is examining complaints about the ill-treatment of hundreds of petrels who are “stuck” on board of the supply vessel Vitus Bering.

Earlier it was said that birds flew to the ice-breaker ship in the port of Kholmsk, are now dying under the feet of crew members and movers, preventing them from walking along the deck.

“It is difficult to judge whether or not real damage was inflicted to the birds, but the behavior of the ship’s team is difficult to call humane treatment of objects of the animal world,” the Ministry of Ecology press service quoted Interfax as saying.

Now, officials have sent warnings that it is unacceptable to violate laws on the protection of wildlife, to the Sakhalin West Sea Port, as well as to Exxon Neftegas Limited - the ship is owned by one of its contractors.

Meanwhile, the port authorities told the department that “all the birds were driven off the deck of the ship, only after that the team started loading and unloading.”

We recall that the head of the Green Sakhalin nature protection fund, Alexander Ivanov, suggested that petrels flew into the ship because the lights were on at night — they attracted birds during the flight. He added that due to the anatomical features of the wing, petrels find it difficult to take off from a flat deck - usually these birds take off from rocks or with an oncoming air stream.
