The State Duma Committee approved tougher penalties for discrediting all participants of the Special military information

The State Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation supported amendments to the Administrative Code and the Criminal Code, providing for tougher penalties for discrediting volunteers and other participants in a special operation up to 15 years in prison and fines up to 5 million rubles.

According to TASS, referring to the decision of the committee posted in the Duma electronic database, for fakes about the activities of volunteer formations during the special operation, which entailed serious consequences, a penalty of up to 16 years in prison will be threatened. For public actions aimed at discrediting the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and all participants in the special operation, regardless of their status, they will face up to 5 years in prison. Public actions to discredit the participants of the SMO, which will result in death or mass riots, may cause imprisonment for a period of 7 years.

The relevant committee approved amendments to the administrative and criminal codes, and also recommended that the State Duma support the initiative. As RIA Novosti notes, changes are planned to be made to Articles 280.3 of the Criminal Code and 13.3.3 of the Administrative Code. Responsibility is also proposed to extend to the public discrediting of volunteers participating in the special operation.
