Killing summer: climatologist commented on the forecast of a sharp warming in Russia

The possibility of such climatic changes was assessed in an interview with Sputnik radio by Vladimir Semyonov, head of the climatology laboratory at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The countries of the Northern Hemisphere, including Russia, are waiting for catastrophic climate change in this century, reports the Phys.org portal, citing the findings of Chinese scientists. Researchers have predicted that summer in the Northern Hemisphere will last almost six months by 2100, unless measures are taken to mitigate the effects of global warming. Temperature shifts can adversely affect agriculture, health and the environment, the publication cites the opinion of Chinese scientists.

This forecast was commented on in an interview with Sputnik radio by the head of the laboratory of climatology at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Semenov. Global warming is indeed taking place, and perhaps after some time, the summer will begin in April and end in November, the scientist said. Moreover, in Russia, according to him, the temperature rises twice as fast as the average on the planet.

“This is true, we all know that global warming is going on, and models predict further warming by the end of the century. Global - about four or five degrees. Accordingly, in Russia the temperature is growing twice as fast and will rise by about ten degrees. If in our country, relatively speaking, May warms even by four degrees, it will no longer be May, but June. Accordingly, with a warming of about ten degrees, the period that we call summer, when the temperature rises to twenty degrees during the day, will begin in April. And the end of summer will shift from August to October, and even to November”, - said Vladimir Semyonov.

Some changes have already taken place, the scientist noted. “We have already seen this trend. According to observational data, somewhere over the past 30 years, the beginning of winter has shifted to a later date, by more than two weeks. The beginning of spring also occurs earlier by about a week. From the latest tendencies - if earlier winter came at the beginning of November, now, if it snowed by the New Year, it is already good”.
