A UK poll found that more than a quarter of dog owners prefer their dog to their partner, and one in five chooses a date on an online dating service based on whether the person has a dog.

Dogs are called man's best friends for a reason. A new poll has shown how important their pets are to dog owners, according to the Daily Mail.

The Kennel Club of England, the world's oldest dog breeding club, surveyed 2,622 Britons with dogs about their priorities. It turned out that

  • 57% of them will not start relationships with people who do not like dogs;
  • almost half - 48% - are more likely to go on a date with a person who has a dog;
  • more than a quarter - 27% - admitted that they prefer their dog to their partner;
  • 20% choose a dating partner on online dating services based on whether a person has a dog;
  • more than two thirds of respondents (67%) admitted that their dog is their best friend;
  • 46% admitted that they would rather spend the night with their four-legged friend than go on a date.

The survey was conducted in July last year, during a lockdown, when it became especially obvious how saving animals are for humans in isolation. Past research has shown that owning a dog has many benefits, including improved physical and mental health, and that pets bring with them the same things as human partners - love, comfort and support during difficult times.

However, the English Kennel Club encourages potential dog owners to think very carefully before adopting a puppy. In the same Great Britain, hundreds of dogs bought during the lockdown ended up in shelters, as the owners found that they did not have the time and opportunities to care for their pets. It is necessary to understand in advance whether you are ready to bear such responsibility for many years, as well as carefully study the question of which breed best suits your lifestyle in order to find your ideal match.
