The former commander (2013-2016) of NATO forces in Europe, General Philip Breedlove, said that the Kerch bridge could be a legitimate target for the Ukrainian army, according to the British edition of The Times.
The general said that he thought the Kerch Bridge was very important for the Russian army, so it was not surprising that Moscow was trying to protect it, and added: “Now that Ukraine has received Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Russia has every reason to be afraid of hitting the bridge.
The first Harpoon missiles with a range of almost 300 km were delivered to Ukraine at the end of May. Prior to this, analysts reported that the receipt by Kyiv of a sufficient number of such weapons could lead to the lifting of the blockade of Ukrainian ports.
The general also noted that the West is now discussing the possibility of a Russian attack on Ukrainian transport ships with grain, as well as the continuation of the blockade of Ukrainian ports. The former commander acknowledged that some officials in the West do not rule out a possible attack on the Kerch Bridge in this case, since this will cause significant damage to Russia, however, many are not sure that supporting such an attack would be the right decision.
Western media have repeatedly reported that the Russian Armed Forces are preparing for a possible attack on the Kerch bridge, and reported that barges with reflective radars appeared near the bridge in order to shoot down the missile guidance system from the target. In addition, thick smoke was seen close to the bridge, which analysts thought was an aerosol screen for air defense.
